Book Review: Meth Monster, The Story of a Resurrected Life by Timothy Blaine

 "The first chance I got, I bought my very first bag of crystal methamphetamine... A monster was born. Try as I might, there is simply no way for me to minimize the impact with which crystal meth slammed into my life, at least not without straying far from the truth. It was like throwing a forty-pound sledge hammer though a plate glass window. What a cunning thing this was that lived inside of me. How could I ever hope to win against it? My good intentions meant nothing what I lacked was power."

Meth Monster has got to be one of the most amazing books I've read in a very long time. Have you ever read a book that no matter the editing mistakes, book cover, long intro, etc you find yourself wishing it never ends?  Well, that's what I experienced while reading Meth Monster.  

I came across Mr. Blaine while over indulging in YouTube gossip.  Not that he's a gossip blogger but his videos were recommended while I watched some of the blog gossipers.  After opening up one of his recommended videos, I realized I liked his commentary.  On that day Timothy Blaine mentioned his drug history and that he had written a book about his experience growing up, then moving to Hollywood, then his love affair with Meth.  I vowed I'd one day read it.  

Two days ago I opened it up...

Well, no need to reinvent the wheel, here is Amazon's synopsis:  

"Meth Monster is the autobiographical story of one gay African American man's personal journey to faith and deliverance from drugs and alcohol, and particularly from the scourge of crystal methamphetamine. The author takes his readers through his troubled early years in Indiana, hustling on the streets of Hollywood, and dealing drugs in the Tenderloin district of San Francisco. Blaine boldly examines his personal demons from the time they take up residence in his subconscious and through their horrific and destructive manifestations. Until I met Mr. Blaine, I never knew of any African American who had experienced Meth (whether that meant using it or knowing someone who used).  In fact, I thought Meth was something new and only consumed by "others" who were not African American.  Boy was I green!  Not only is Meth not new but there were/are African Americans struggling with the drug.

If you'd like to get major facts (to include rawness) about his struggle with sexuality, domestic violence, the prison pipeline, addiction, and accepting Christ choose this book as your next read.  I promise, just like me, you will not want to put it down.

Jalila Sowers: From Broken To Breakthrough

What a great replay of amazing events all graciously scripted for us by Jalila Sowers.  It's also oh so amazing how one can write great stories without all the glitz and glimmer.  You see, there was no need for a whole lot of dressing in my opinion.  This remarkable story stands alone.

God why me? Sitting in a puddle of my own tears balled up in a fetal position. I'm feeling like these four walls are caving in on me. It's pitch black. I can't see or think. My heart is racing. I've finally lost it. My screams are getting louder and louder. How did I get to this point in my life? How did I become exactly what I set out not to be? A statistic! I was just another stereotypical young black single mother, from the hood living in poverty. Pinching pennies scratching and crawling trying to take care of my four children alone. I'm feeling like thirty years on this earth has come crashing down on me like a ton of bricks Heartbreak after heartbreak, tears upon tears, failure after failure. Living the life where poverty and violence is the normal. And success is just a dream. How can I try to instill the quality of life into my children when all I have been exposed to is this? I'm constantly torturing myself and haunted by the creativity that flows through me. Oh how I wish there was a rewind button. I need to escape. This darkness is eating my soul. 

Another thing that grabs my  attention is how well the author told her story  without adding unnecessary fluff.  I think you know what I mean.  Many of us have picked up material all packaged in gold, only to find out it should have been wrapped in foil. OR we've embarked on journeys (through story telling) that seem to never end without ever getting to the actual point of the journey .  

Not here my dear readers.  You will not find any of that here.

Do not take for granted that it's a quick read either.  In my opinion From Broken To Breakthrough is short and to the point.  You'll find yourself engulfed in the pages and wishing you were there with Ms. Sowers as a friend, encouraging her to continue her journey in spite of her challenges.  You'll let her know there is definitely a silver lining in the middle of the storm(s).

I was so excited to finally receive my bundle of books in the mail today!

Being an author myself, I love exploring new writers or writers that are new to me.  I can't even remember how I stumbled upon Mrs. Rainie Howard but I am so glad I did.  

Out of the three books I received, I started reading two while also reading a couple other books by other authors, only to realize I devoured You Are Enough in one sitting.  

Side bar:  Addicted to Pain, is probably the next one I'll complete.

'Cause yes ma'am and yes sir, You Are Enough is that good!

You Are Enough is so good, five stars good.  I will be referencing it in my other blog (Today's Lady Chaplain) and possibly in my upcoming book, The Reflection of Neediness.  You have to understand, there is no way to pretend I didn't read this phenomenal book when every part of what I'll say or do from now is due to how much I have processessed, relearned, and committed to while reading it.  

Usually I speed read because I read many many things at once.  However this time was different...very different. I found myself reading slowly. I read slow and steady in order to "taste" every word written.  I couldn't get enough. Therefore, I went back a couple of times to the previous chapters. "When the student is ready, the teacher appears."  My soul just opened up.

To everyone reading my review, I have to let you know, prior to kowing anything about Rainie Howard or her books, I prayed for every page of this book and probably the others too.  I asked God to speak to me NOW.  You know how it is when you just need a "word" from Heaven?  

Well, the words came.  It was as if Rainie Howard was speaking directly to me (directed by God of course).  Her details about her childhood were also for me.  The details were mine.  If I didn't know how the Universe operates, I would think "what a fantastic coincidence."  As with many spiritualists, I know there is no such thing as coincidence.  Everything is spiritually orchestrated down to the tiniest of details.  Hence, this book now in my house, sitting on my bed covered with notes in my handwriting.  No coincidence.

Spoiler alert!  

I don't often do this but in order to thoroughly give gratitude to the author and to paint a picture of how wonderful this read is, I must share a few passages as well as my responses to them:

Author - I can't remember ever feeling like I was good enough.

ME - No one ever told me I wasn't good enough, they didn't have to.  Their selfishness told me many times.  I felt I wasn't important enough to replace the objects of their attention and/or constant affections.  I never came first.

ix - 

Author - Those thoughts would influence me to work even harder to be "good" or even perfect and to make others happy.

ME- I told myself, "You have to be better.  You have to do everything right."

xi - 

You may feel like you're not strong enough, pretty enough, or smart enough, but you will learn that in our weaknesses, God is made strong.  God has given you everything you need to fulfill your destiny.  Never doubt what God is doing in you.  You must understand that you are enough.  

"The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing."  - Psalm 23:1


What a masterpiece!  

To also include Psalm 23 is another one of those things spiritually orchestrated for me.  I teach on Psalm 23 often.  The chapter is near and dear to me.  I truly believe You Are Enough will be that for you.  It is a must read.

No matter where you are in your relationship with yourself, with others, a significant other, or with life there is something said in this book that will definitely give you one (if not several) of those "ah ha" moments and yes Mrs. Howard, this book is going to transform lives.  

Readers will (I know I will) definitely create new habits that will give peace and joy.  Inevitably, readers will become doers and build the strengtrh to completely let go of toxic relationships and the confidence and self-esteem to grow in healthy relationships.

Let me start with a little conversation with the beautiful author Ms. Deborah Jeanine.  Ms. Deborah why did you give me all of that bubble gum to leave me trying to blow bubbles?  

Oh my love, I found myself filling in my own unanswered questions with several of my made up scenario endings.  

Trust me readers, once you get a hold of this read right here, you will want to knock on Ms. Deborah's door with questions too.  It's like a person seemingly telling a great joke but they forget to deliver the punch line.

Now, here is the good part of having questions, we will definitely want to buy the next book hoping to get the answers and/or the "punch line". 

*****A change of heart...

Ladies and gentlemen, I had to rethink everything I initially said about "Bubblegum Marriage" because something very significant really hit me deep in my spirit.  I won't change any of what I previously said.  But, I admit, I do have a slight change of heart.

Here is why I have a slight change of heart...

For those of you who have embarked on the journey called, writing your memoir or autobiography, you know for certain that it is one of the most challenging experiences you will ever face.  There are so many highs and lows.  It's an emotional roller coaster sometimes from hell.  You come face to face with every aspect of who you were and are.  Many of those experiences bring up emotions some of us may not be ready to face.  This is why you hear stories of people spending years writing their life's story.

So, back to my spirit...

I will go out on a limb and say this is why "Bubble Gum Marriage" left me without the CHRONIC.  When I saw the words bubblegum and chronic in the title, I knew I'd get some syrupy sweetness.  That to me was a given.  However, I also thought I'd  get a bit of that 'shoooooownuff  chronic'! 

Nevertheless, guess what?  Regardless of whether I am right or wrong as to why I had to provide my own fillers, I enjoyed having this reading experience and believe me, so will you.

What A Blessing

I am so honored to have shared her platform recently at the Show Up and Show Out Conference held in Antioch, TN.  Like so many who accepted her invitation, I am so grateful she sought me out to be a part of her sacred space. 

Minister Angela, I learned in such a very short time, is a generous soul who is led by God to not only win souls but to also identify with the souls she encounters.  The day I met Minister Angela I felt she is someone whom I've known forever.  She was no stranger to me at the time of meeting.  In fact, while reading You are Unstoppable, I knew the words from the book are/were her words, thoughts, and deeds.  She's just that transparent.

I know I'm tempting you so much right now.  Trust me, I'm doing it purposely.  You must read this book! You have to read it for yourself in order to understand why I'm so passionate about getting it in your hands.  Trust me, you won't regret the purchase.

What a must read! These women writers are taking their lives back by telling their stories of pain, love, betrayal, success, failure, relationships and ultimately their purpose.

What I've learned in the business of writing is that often times our manuscripts may not be perfect. We all know this. BUT the story that is told is often times most amazingly written in the midst of a raw manuscript. Life isn't perfect. Life is definitely what we make of it and what we learn in order to move to the next level or next phase in life.

Ava Brown, the compiler of Pain to Purpose, authoress, life coach, mother, former wife, and #phenomenal woman successfully gives her readers personal accounts of pain to purpose. She fills us with rawness from these ladies stories, from beginning to end. The ladies sharing their stories should be commended for opening themselves to us as they have. I am so grateful to have had an opportunity to be trusted with giving a Phenomenal Rave Review.

"Till I Grow"

Ladies and gents who have been depending on me to deliver another raving review. Well, I have to be transparent on this one, as I have with the other reads. Unfortunately, my review is more from a side-line perspective.

Because I have spoken with the author a few times and have read bits and pieces of the book, I must tell the truth. Due to the death of my mother, I am not emotionally strong enough to totally commit to reading this powerful piece of work. I am not strong enough to indulge in the chapters of Rayshawn McAuley's account of her trial with this "Beast" called cancer.

Unlike many, Rayshawn McAuley overcame cancer and is spreading her message of triumph. As with other #PhenomenalWomen, she rises higher and higher everyday. It is with great honor to be apart of her reading audience. Yes, I am grateful to have met her. I am grateful to have her in my midst.

So, to all of you avid readers, devour this book. If you are ready, willing and able to open your mind and heart to Rayshawn's message, please do so as soon as possible.

Ladies and gentlemen, workplace bullying is just as real as the bullying some children face on a daily basis. in fact, it is often times just as frightening if not more. For those who have never experienced bullying, then read Ms. Angeline Lawrence's book because she takes you on an explicit journey...her journey.

She gives the reader a first-hand account of her many experiences of work place bullying. Lawrence also tells us how she overcame her destructive and negative encounters by using God's word. She put on the entire Armor of God every single day armed for battle.

Again, it's hard to imagine an adult belittling another adult for any reason, especially in the work place. However, it's an ordeal many face but we never hear the stories. In fact, you'd think grown ups on a job are professional at all times. Well, think again!

My Phenomenals this is absolutely a must read.

Motherless Child

What do you say about a book you have no words for?  Do you call it wonderful?  Do you call it extraordinary?  Or what about phenomenal?  Well, I have to say something right?  It's my job to write a review.  Ms. Valencia your book is wonderful-extraordinary-phenomenal- and any other word that describes perfectly written.

Not only did you tell your story well, you stayed within a timeline that made it easy for any reader to follow without wondering how did I get here.  It flowed and fit like a hand in a glove.  I knew before I asked you to send me your manuscript, it would not disappoint.

Before I rate it though, I'd like to point one thing out to you and your readers.  Without giving away too much, on page 12 you really struck me when you asked (something like) if anyone ever wonder or care about the children of drug addicts.  Well, as a product of drug use, I wondered the same thing as a child.  However, I can boldly say, yes many people do wonder and care.  Often times we do not understand how society can or may turn a blinds eye to the children but many will stop at nothing to help these children like you and me.  You shared that part of your journey when you told about your dear friend Abby.

Another thing to add, I commend your strength.  I have to commend your courage. I know the depths of hell you had to visit in order to bless us with this piece of art.  So many children, I pray, will read "Motherless Child" and see themselves as I have.  They will find the strength they need to live on.  Many adults will read, I hope, and know they aren't the only ones who have struggled or still struggle.  Healing is a process.  As long as you have the courage to seek peace, you will find it.

Oh wow, I can go on all day.  I will not though.  Drum roll please....

The Spiritual Battle

Sometimes there is only one word to define something and today for me, the word for Lucretia Shaw Cargill's book, is PHENOMENAL!

Before I continue with my review, I must remind my readers that my reviews are of amateur authors/writers.  I give these new writers a platform that is very rarely provided, especially to thoe who aren't writing erotica.  That's a whole 'nother story in itself.  But, I digress!

Because the message in this book is so darn remarkable, I almost forgot Mrs. Cargill is what we call amateur.  If she's not seasoned in her walk as an author, she is definitely or appears to be seasoned in her faith walk.  She constantly reminds us (the readers) of her experiences of pain, persistence, dedication, and strength while yet reminding us that we wrestle not with flesh and blood.  Therefore, we must cast all of our cares on the one who gives us life.

I enjoyed reading "The Spiritual Battle".  In fact, I enjoyed it so much, I forgot I had more books in Que.  I wanted to read every word from start to finish. I found myself trying to buy time.  I think what resonated with me is her particular style of telling her story.  I'm not sure if she knows it or not but I almost thought I was reading one of the many old school christian books my great grand mother used to have sitting in her living room.  You see, there is no fluff with this book.  There is no new age jargon...just real raw heart wrenching christian emotion. 

Yes, Lucretia took me back to my roots.  What an enjoyable experience.

The Broken Image

"Continuing from chapter one, About Myself, something was missing. What was missing was my innocence. It was already taken away. I had a lack of identity due to past experiences and so instead of going off to college to fulfill purpose, I was going off to college to try and seek out an identity."

In my most humble opinion, the story began or I thought it began for me after reading the quote above.  Then really shortly after, Ms. Young dropped me off right there and  then shut the door ... tightly shut.  I'm like what happened? 

I want more!!!!!  Ms. Young, you can't just leave me here wondering what happened to you as a child or young adult that makes you a person of integrity on the subject of, "brokenness".  What was your struggle?  What did it look or feel like?  You told me what it should look like to be healed but somewhere along the way I missed YOUR story before the healing. 

I think many readers will feel the same as I do.  They'll want to know so much more about what happened to Tera  that really led to her passion to write this story.  What I think is happening here, after much contemplation, is a compare/contrast sort of tale. 

Overall Ms. Young gives great biblical perspectives and then she gives the readers flashes of her personal encounters or accounts of her life. I think once the above questions are addressed, "The Broken Image" will be on it's way to SUCCESS.

STRETCHED THIN

FINDING BALANCE WORKING AND PARENTING CHILDREN WITH SPECIAL NEEDS

First and foremost I'd like to say thank you Dr. Lisbon for such a remarkable expression of truth, strength, transparency, and dedication.  I think, Stretched Thin touched me more deeply than many I've read before, mostly due to the fact that I was a caretaker of an ailing parent, my mother for many many years.  I truly understand what it's like to be everything to almost everyone, to include the family member who can't care for him/herself, but to also try to keep yourself from sinking or falling into deep despair.

"The truth is, grief is a funny thing. I am battling today as to how much of myself I am willing to

share, for fear that it may create conflict with those I love.  Yet, if I am untrue to myself and my readers, writing this book will be a waste of everyone’s time, as I am not walking in my authentic truth. For me, the vision for you is that as you read this book, the words on every page will provide

light and hope in a place that has seemed to be filled with hopelessness" 

How can you get any more open that that which Dr. Lisbon expresses right at the very beginning of the book.  She sets the tone for vulnerability, not just for her but for the reader as well.  I felt right at home upon reading the first page.

This is one of the most well written books, dedicated to not only Dr. Lisbon's two boys, but it provides a road of great hope (with endearing words of truth) for those who are also traveling a not so smooth course.  But, guess what?  As with, Dr. Lisbon, the sun shines again and again even after several storms. 

I believe the lesson from this great read is that in any situation there is challenge and triumph.  No parent wants their child to go through hurts or disappointment.  No parent wants to hear the words their child or children are a little less than normal.  But, Dr. Lisbon, like many other parents have taken those words, those labels, those abnormalities and risen above them while helping the world also learn how to do the same.

Book Review -

I Am Who God Says I Am

What a refreshing read!  

Minister Kiesha L. Peterson's, "I am Who God Says I am," reminds readers of all ages, of something  priceless many have forgotten.  

Through life's challenges, unfortunately we undoubtedly forget who God says we are.  We become tainted with ungodliness that sometimes feel like shackles.  But GOD!  

Minister Peterson's book is definitely one of God's beautiful conduits used to bring his children back to the realization that we are definitely who He says we are.  Here is one of the most poignant and profound sections of Peterson's book, The Mirror.

The mirror is made up of a material that allows us to see ourselves, our outward appearance. The mirror allows us to see the color of our skin, our pimples, our blotches, blemishes and deformities. The mirror lest us see when our hair is out of place, it even lets us see when tears run down our face. However, the mirror doesn’t allow us to see the goodness that God has placed inside of each and every one of us.

The Mirror resonated with me so much.  Truthfully, I am guilty of looking in the mirror several occasions, only to add special touches to this or that but there are very few times I look at myself and say, "I am Who God Says I am", which is -

-Romans 8:2

 As a child of God, I am a fellow heir with

Christ.

-Romans 8:17

 I have been predestined by God to obtain an

inheritance.

-Ephesians 1:11

 I have been sealed with the Holy Spirit of

promise.

-Galatians 4:7

 I am God’s workmanship created to produce

good works.

Doesn't it feel good just to be reminded?

Thanksgiving is such a wonderful time for me.  I love loving family especially at this time of the year.  My husband, my children, my family and friends mean the world to me.  

This morning I realized just how blessed, how really blessed I am.  

True, there are things I desire to have.  There are places I desire to go.  However, I am finally loving where I am.  I'm thankful for where I'm going.  

Lord knows it's taken me half a lifetime to get to this place but thank God I'm here.  Yesterday I kept looking at the selfie my husband and little girl took.  As I looked at it, my emotions rose higher and higher.  I'm so grateful to have such love.  I wouldn't trade it for anything in the world.  

If you desire this type of love, start by first loving where you are and what you have.  I know everyone doesn't desire the same things.  For example, after being in my secluded world with my hubby and child for a couple of years, I started to desire friends...real friends outside of my circle of the known, the comfortable, the secure.  Well, people started knocking on my door.  You know what, I'm starting to open the door wider and wider because I know they are gifts.  

This may be the love some of us desire as I did.  And, of course I'm oh so thankful for it.

LOVE

In this video the young man has a severe handicap that probably would have sent most women the other way, running.  Not in this case!  Not only did he gain a friend, a lover, an angel, a confidante, this young man gained a wife.

Oh let me add, I spoke to my students about their idea of love and relationships last night.  Many who know me, I mean truly knows me, know that I'm in love with LOVE.  So, I share this energy where ever I go.  OMG, most of my student's views were so bleak, I almost couldn't stand it.  But, I realized, I too was once in that very space.  Readers, I pray I'll never be in such darkness ever again.  

I've learned that love shows up the way love is truly expressed through each of us.  In essence, if you give it with expectations and motive, then you'll get the same in return.  If you give love sparingly, you'll get or not get.
